Continuing
on the initiatives of previous years, Vastu-Shilpa Foundation
this year conducted two International Habitat Design Studios.
One of which was a ten day workshop for 30 students from Curtin
University in Australia while the other one was eight week long
and was participated in by twenty five student from architectural
schools in Germany, Switzerland and India. Studio this year
was focused on "Sustainable and Affordable Living Environments"
and was conducted from 20th February to 20th April 2005. The
emphasis of the studio was to understand the urban Indian context,
analyze its social, cultural, political, environmental conditions
and evolve innovative design solutions for humane and sustainable
built forms in urban centres of India. Living environments of
the poor were chosen as the context for their redevelopment.
A site of Ramdevpir Tekra, Wadaj and Gulbai Tekra were selected
for the studio. Alternative development models are evolved to
demonstrate how city could benefit through holistic development
vision as well as coordinated and integrated planning processes.
Prof. Balkrishna Doshi, Prof.Yatin Pandya and Prof. Rajeev Kathpalia
conducted the studio at Ahmedabad at Vastu Shilpa Foundation's
premises. Prof. Haresh Pandya (Germany) was the coordinator
in Europe. While, Prof. Reena Tiwari (Australia), Prof. Anne
Farren (Australia) Prof. Juerg Grunder (Switzerland), Prof.
Claus Steffan (Germany), Prof. Jan Knippers (Germany) , Prof.
Mathey Costa (Germany), Prof.Hannalore Deubzer were faculty
from respective schools.
